“Freedom; It is our greatest desire…”

Back to the Future Day came and went this year, and while hoverboards exist, most of us still haven’t ridden one yet. For those of you who don’t have the balance or the aptitude for the so-called ‘hoverboards’ we’ve all seen people parading around on recently (or if you don’t fancy risking being set alight with their exploding lithium batteries), never fear: themost of us still haven’t ridden one yet. For those of you who don’t have the balance or the aptitude for the so-called ‘hoverboards’ we’ve all seen people parading around on recently (or if you don’t fancy risking being set alight with their exploding lithium batteries), never fear: the ArcaBoard Hoverboard is here!

And all for the low low price of close to $20,000…

Arcaboard

Offering 60 minutes ride time from a single charge – which takes up to 6 hours – the vehicle is lifted by 36 high-power electric ducted fans (EDF), delivering over 270 horsepower. The boards also include a stabilisation unit that can be controlled with a smartphone, but more intense riders can turn off the stabilisation system and steer the ArcaBoard with their bodies.

Snow, water, ice, land – there’s no limitations. Dumitru Popescu, from ARCA Space Corpadded that he believed ArcaBoard to be the most powerful personal vehicle ever created, which suits their tagline:

“Engineering the Future”

At $19,900, though, how many of us will really enjoy this future in the near-future? For now, ArcaBoard is being launched as a recreational vehicle, but it is considered that it may have other applications as well in the future. It is expected that the company will reveal some of them at the end of January.

The plan is to begin shipping pre-orders on April 15, 2016. Currently, ArcaBoard is available for purchase in three colours (beige, green, and blue) with options for extended endurance or thrust – but not both. There is also a docking station available for an additional $4,500 that will charge the board to full capacity in 35 minutes, as opposed to the standard charger’s 6 hour wait time.

The clear downfalls aside, it’s still a fully-functioning hoverboard, which is undeniably impressive.
