It looks like Lego aren’t the only brand making changes: Barbie has had a 21st century makeover! The popular children’s toy has finally answered years of calls to diversify their dolls in the form of 3 new ranges: tall, curvy and petite.


The iconic manufacturer Mattel has rolled out a new range of dolls which includes 4 body types, 7 skin tones, 22 eye colours, 24 hairstyles and the usual copious amounts of clothing and accessories to suit. The announcement was made through a video, with a young girl explaining exactly why it is important that Barbie looks different, and looks more like “real people”.


Mattel isn’t just taking a stance on body image, but also on female empowerment. Barbie made the news last year for featuring a young boy playing with the limited edition Moschino variant, breaking stereotypical gender roles, and they are following suit in 2016 with their new message.

Later on in the year, everyone’s favourite doll will have whole new avenues of career paths to explore, including game developer, spy, and of course…President! However, Mattel will still carry the original Barbie figure should you ever want one.


This is a great move from Mattel and looks to be the start of a collection of dolls which truly reflect society and young women. It is now a whole lot easier to ‘look like Barbie‘.
