After a lengthy hiatus during which some clever coder attempted to delete our little patch of internet, we return with more crowdfunded genius.
Welcome to the thirty-fourth instalment of our weekly series: The Kings of Kickstarter. Our last Kings all those weeks ago showcased ingenuity in its purest form, from turning plastic bottles into string to heartbreaking documentaries.
As per usual, NUBI has procured 5 Kings (and of course one jester) and presented them below. Ranked in descending order, only one can claim the title of Supreme Overlord.
#5. DuoGraph Drawing Machine – Joe Freedman
“Portable and compact yet capable of infinite designs.”
Spirograph used to be the weapon of choice for kids everywhere when it came to breaking the nibs on various pens and pencils as you frantically traversed the hundreds of plastic discs in search of the ultimate sacred geometry.
Fast forward to 2016 and Joe Freedman – a drawing machine aficionado – has combined all the best elements of his previous devices into his latest kickstarter DuoGraph. Known as an epicycloid machine, there is some serious craft and math driving the two separate sets of gears – a prime set and a divisible set.
Couple this with the fact that the penholder is moveable and you’ve tapped into a source of infinite geometric patterns at your disposal. This is the perfect thing to sit and watch as the daily dose of existential dread washes over you. That or you make absolutely banging cards.
