LA Salami – Dancing with Bad Grammar (Interview)

2014 was a big year for LA Salami, with Burberry asking for a soundtrack for their SS/14 Menswear campaign, Esquire listing him in the top ten “Most Stylish Men in Music” and of course, legendary Zane Lowe singling him out as a future star of BBC Radio 1.

Now, 2 years later, compared to the likes of Neil Young and Joni Mitchell, LA Salami has been played numerous times on radio and recently toured, promoting his latest release, an album entitled “Dancing With Bad Grammar”.

We had a chat to the rising star.

Could you introduce yourself?

Hello, my name’s Lookman Adekunle Salami

When did you start making music?

I was a young man, starving and smoking and trying to be an artist. I did most of my singing under the creaky stalls in London’s royal court of open mics – Let that settle in, cut my teeth at forgetting my words for the first time sometime in the winter of twenty oh nine. Wading home that night, my toes burning, my throat sealed shut, my back door thoughts chasing John Fante up the hill of Sisyphus-like a herd of silent laughing tumbleweed, I stopped in my tracks. The time had come to take stock. Fair weather or foul, certain forces in the world were at work to destroy me.

“Salami”, I said, “hold it.

What was the initial direction of your music and how has this developed over time?

To be swallowed whole by your intentions is as honest as you can be to fate. My intention has always been to become who I can potentially be. The music develops along side that.

What inspires you?

Everything and anything at any given moment.

Is there any artists you would like to collab with in the near future?

I’m gonna be collaborating with Francobollo (members of which also happen to currently make up my backing band, who I call The Bootmakers) on The Unscene Supper Klub aka T.U.S.K – EP coming early next year.

You recently released Dancing with Bad Grammar, what was the whole concept behind the project and what did you hope to gain from it?

The concept is doing the best with what you have. The time you have the time you want. I’m almost 43 years around the sun (but I look 24!) – My blood father just lost his mind, I’m currently losing mine – My brother lost a foot to a land mine – time time time – Where do the blues come from? What is a painting? What is art? What does the 4th dimension look like from the outside? Who knows? I don’t know. Sing, play, paint, write, wince, wine, weed? Fine.

I gain the release of releasing it.

What made you want to make The City and then release it as a single? Current political happenings?

I wrote it before the shit hit the fan – But you could feel it brewing… For a long time.

What can we expect from L.A. Salami in the near future? What have you got planned?
