Excuse me if I’m late to the party but I’ve just come across Lady Gaga’s Music Video for ” ‘Til It Happens To You.” And it is really f***king important.
I can’t stress how imperative it is for people to actually start talking about this video, or more accurately the topic the video brings to light. The music video highlights rape and sexual abuse across schools in America, and Lady Gaga wrote the song for the film, The Hunting Ground.
The Hunting Ground is a documentary that exposes the rape culture happening in College Campuses across America. Andrea Pino and Annie E Clark who were raped during their time at The University of North Carolina, among other students in similar situations, who talk about their experiences as well as how they were made to jump through hoops in order to get support and justice. It suggests that the colleges were more worried about their sexual assault statistics, rather than looking out for the victims of sexual abuse. 1 in 5 women in American college campuses are subjected to sexual assault. 1 in 5.
So once again, this is happening all the way in America right? And you’re probably thinking, “what does this have to do with us in the UK?” It has everything to do with the UK. 1 in 3 female students will experience sexual assault during their time in higher education, and sexual assault cases aren’t isolated to females. Even if you don’t go to university, the message within this video is one that resonates for everyone – especially those who have experienced sexual abuse. Whether you’re male or female; gay, straight, transgender or whatever.
The message of this video needs to be shared and remembered every single day.
No one has ever asked for it.
This is not your fault.
You will recover from this.
You are not worthless.
