Capital Xtra’s Music Potential Bootcamp event returned for it’s second year to Birmingham in association with Barclaycard, delivered at Heath Mill Studios by Punch Records. After a successful year in 2012, with hundreds on potential scholars of the industry attending to partake in workshops run by the likes of Akala, Ashley Walters & RoxXxan, 2014 was just as exciting, with the likes of DJ Melody Kane (Official SBTV & Nandos DJ), DJ Wonder (Producer for likes of Kano & Dizzee Rascal) and Daniel Alexander (Music Video Producer with works featured on MTV) all running workshops for young enthusiasts (16-24 yr olds) hoping to get their foot into the big bad music industry.
As with many workshop events run across the city for young people, at the beginning of the day all you see is a line of dull looking faces, a sense of lingering uncertainty and a lack of confidence. Unsurprisingly however, take a snapshot standing from the same position at the end of the day; an opposing picture is painted, with bright faces of excitement, confidence and inspiration. Breaking off into smaller groups and taking part in a workshop run by industry experts, either DJing, Song writing, Video production, Radio or Music production, attendees were able to learn new skills, grab the opportunities in front of them and be inspired by their colleagues in the same position as them, during the end of day showcase in which their experiences were shared and included live performances from the music producers and song writers, sharing full bodies of work that they had produced in a matter of hours. Such talent was very impressive and proved the potential that there is in the city.
This year, Music Potential is offering an intensive 10 week exclusive programme, “MP Xtra”, in which a selected number of attendees of the Bootcamp day will be invited to take part in, and gain invaluable insight and experience into their chosen field within the industry. This is an exciting project and has already proven extremely successful, as a handful of those that attended the Music Potential Bootcamp day were in the same position as the young people last year, and now have a whole host of their own responsibilities and roles within the industry, including their own radio shows, after taking part in this programme.
Events such as this are key to unlocking the potential that this city, along with many others, has in the music industry. A pride of young, courageous and ambitious go-getters make up a new generation, a new breed of undeniably talented musicians, artists, producers, everything, and it’s vital that major platforms such as Capital Xtra’s Music Potential continue to offer the support, guidance and opportunities for these future superstars to start paving their path into the industry.
