Last October, electronic mastermind Flying Lotus dropped his fifth album entitled You’re Dead! ; widely considered as one of the best albums of 2014. Hailed for its weird and wonderful nature, crossing genres from jazz to electronic to hip-hop and prog rock, the record is experimental through and through.
The album features names such as the legendary Herbie Hancock, rap veteran Snoop Dogg, long time collaborator Thundercat, and the man everyone seems to be talking about at the moment; Mr Kendrick Lamar.
Bizarre, manic, a bit all over the place; somehow, Flying Lotus has the genius and precision to create an album that is all this and more. He merges his jazz heritage with a progressive and forward-thinking style, which culminates in one of the weirdest but most incredible albums I’ve heard.
Moving his live show from his earlier date at the Albert Hall due to scheduling problems, Flying Lotus brings the insanity to Manchester’s Academy this Thursday 30th April, where he is joined by Settle Hip-Hop group Shabazz Palaces and Brighton-born producer/DJ, Kutmah for support.
As one of only three UK dates on his tour (the other two being Glasgow and London), this is one not to be missed.
Expect, as the title suggests, an exploration of music through the afterlife and beyond.
