The horned hero and his Right Hand of Doom may soon be gracing the silver screen again to finish Del Toro’s Hellboy trilogy. We were first introduced to the series in 2004, in Guillermo del Toro’s comic book adaptation ‘Hellboy’. The devilish character was successful enough to green light a sequel, ‘Hellboy II: The Golden Army’. The sequel did okay at the box office, but didn’t get the numbers to have a third instalment of the franchise approved right away. Both were incredibly popular when it came to DVD and video sales, however in today’s world where DVD and video sales are declining, this doesn’t have the impact it once did on studio confidence in the franchise.
More recently the actor that plays Hellboy, Ron Perlman, came out and spoke about the franchise, saying that he’d met with Del Toro and talked about the possible third instalment. It seems that Ron Perlman doesn’t seem too eager to play Hellboy once again:
“I really feel as though I’m done with the character. I don’t have a burning desire to put that shit on again.”
Who can blame him? It takes roughly 4 hours to transform Ron Perlman into Hellboy through the makeup routine. That requires a lot of patience. However, after talking to Del Torro it seems Ron Perlman may be up for continuing his role as Hellboy…
“Guillermo told me what the resolve of the trilogy would look like, in broad strokes, and it’s such an amazingly theatrical, cinematic idea, that I found it essential that we do it. We were designed to be a trilogy, with a beginning, a middle and an end. We’ve only done two-thirds, so I feel that we’re not really done until we finish it.”
Perlman went on to say more about Hellboy’s role in the film and how the rugged character is closely linked with the apocalypse:
“Holy shit, he’s the beast of the Apocalypse. He has to take down civilisation. He has to. It’s non-negotiable. That’s the foundation for the story, and that’s why I think it would be a shame if we don’t do it.”
At the end of Hellboy II we see that Liz Sherman is pregnant with Hellboy’s babies, ending with a freeze frame of a shocked looking Hellboy. Ron Perlman also went on to say that Hellboy’s children will be included in the third instalment. It will be very interesting to see how having a family will now affect Hellboy’s character as the apocalypse comes around.
I for one thoroughly enjoyed the other two Hellboy films by Del Torro, and if they’re ready to create another one, I’m certain it will be another great film that’s fun to watch. To see Ron Perlman don the rugged red superhero garb once more and complete the trilogy is something that I’m sure will please its audience – let’s just hope the studios give them the right backing to make it properly.
