a4216081436_10It may be a bias of mine but I do firmly believe that Canada produces some of the most underrated but also some of the best artists out right now and Slakah is the reason for the start of this whole love affair.

After having created a masterpiece in hip-hop soul with his 1st Soul Movement vol.1, the multi-instrumentalist, singer, mc and producer is back with the 2nd installment. For those unfamiliar with Slakah, he brings a level of soul that’s all too absent from much of today’s music, combining great musicianship, smooth lounge-like vibes, funky basslines and soulful harmonies. This along with his great collaborations completes a palette that can’t help but make me feel like digging up a trilby, waistcoat and heading out to my nearest jazzy coffee shop for an inspiring open mic session.

Slakah brings everything to be expected and more to the table, combining some great set-the-mood music (‘Adventure for 2’, ‘Number 1’ ft Glenn Lewis and ‘Us Theory’, some great hit-the-floor anthems for you bboys, bgirls, groovers and shakers (‘Stompthatflo’ ft SpekWon, ‘Love Fool’ ft Tanika Charles), a rather Neptune-esque joint (‘Something about her’) and a great house inspired beauty (‘Keep Up’ ft Ayah, possibly my favorite song on the album).

The influences of artists such as J Dilla, D’angelo and Raphael Saadiq are draped all over the project with a sparse but just enough spattering of Damu the Fudgemunk and Pete Rock. Slakah shows us once again why he’s one of music’s best kept secrets. With an incredible ensemble of featured artists such as Ayah, Glenn Lewis, Tanika Charles and Ian Kamau, Soul Movement vol.2 opens doors to an entire other world of music waiting to wrap you up in a soul infused, jazz tinged cappuccino scented embrace.

You can hear the progression in Slakah’s production and most definitely vocal steez, this is a must have for any of you missing that neo-soul, hip-hop blend of music that seemed to have died all too soon after the 90’s, and when it’s available in a choice of formats (CD, MP3 or WAV) for under £10 what excuse can you possibly muster to not fall headlong in love with this guy?? And with another 2 projects under his belt (Something Forever and Soul Movement vol.1) you’ll have happy earphones for a long while to come.
